Digital Advertising in the Day and Age of Big Data: What Works and What’s Noise

Claudia Perlich, Chief Scientist, Dstillery & Adjunct Professor, NYU

Is digital data really all it’s cracked up to be? Find out how digital data helps revolutionize marketing by creating a new breed of audiences using machine learning and predictive modeling. How can marketers look at digital data in fresh ways to gain audience insights? Where are there gaps and how can data help fill them? Get an insider’s view that will show you how to separate the data that matters from the hype.

The Digital Self — An Introduction to Brain-Computer Interfaces

Conor Russomanno, Adjunct Faculty, Parsons the New School for Design

OpenBCI co-founder and CEO, Conor Russomanno, will be discussing the emergence of the real-world brain-computer interface (BCI). The presentation will address the state of the art with regards to low-cost electroencephalography (EEG) technology, current trends in BCI being transplanted from the laboratory and into the everyday life, and how the open-source community has a huge role to play in accelerating innovation in the field brain science. The brain is one of the final frontiers of human discovery and expansion, and more people should be a part of the conversation.

Disruption, Hacking, and Collaborative Networked Interaction
Jonah Brucker-Cohen, Assistant Professor, Lehman College, CUNY

Jonah will discuss his work in the theme of “Deconstructing Networks and Disruptive Technologies” in both their physical and online instantiations. He will introduce projects that subvert accepted notions of network interaction from software manipulation to translating virtual processes into the physical world. The Enhancing Ability Challenge: Design Technology for People with Disabilities

Shiri Azenkot, Assistant Professor, Cornell Tech

The Enhancing Ability Lab at Cornell Tech challenges you to design technology that will make the world more accessible to people with disabilities in 45 mins or less! In this workshop, you will learn about an important problem that people with disabilities face in their daily lives. We will then split up into groups and each group will together brainstorm and prototype a technology-based solution to the problem. You will meet and consult with our lab members, a group of researchers that develops technology for people with disabilities, and people with disabilities who will share ether personal experiences and provide feedback for your ideas. Join us for a fun and fast introduction to accessibility!

Live Interactive Storytelling
Shawn Van Every, Faculty, NYU Interactive Telecommunications Program

How can storytellers use new technologies to create interactive experiences that engage their audiences? In this workshop, Shawn Van Every will demonstrate a live interactive storytelling platform he is developing, describe what he has learned in the process and will offer attendees the ability try it out to develop a story of their own.

Mobile Livestreaming: Is "Spontaneous Togetherness" a Next-Gen Media Paradigm or Fizzling Fad?

David Carroll, Associate Professor of Media Design, Parsons the New School for Design

We'll demo and evaluate three major mobile live streaming apps in this workshop: Meerkat, Periscope, and Upclose while inventorying other players in this wild new space that allows anyone with a smartphone to instantly attract live audiences who engage interactively in realtime. We'll discuss how people are using this new way of making media, interacting, and communicating and contrast it with other social media practices. We'll also consider the mechanisms used to assess traction on these new platforms. Come prepared by pre-installing the apps and connecting your accounts as we'll encourage experimentation because the best way to figure out live streaming is to both produce and consume it.

Who's Afraid of Data? Hands-On Analysis for Absolute Beginners
Jonathan Stray, Fellow, Tow Center for Digital Journalism, Columbia University

Intrigued by data journalism but unsure where to start? In this hour long workshop you will personally investigate a few classic data sets, including the survivors of the Titanic. We'll use spreadsheets and some basic visualization tools to demystify the data analysis process and get you started on your own stories. No previous experience required! Bring a laptop with Excel.

Working to Make Online News More Commercially Viable and Democratically Beneficial

Talia Stroud, Associate Professor, University of Texas at Austin

Figuring out how to engage audiences online can be tricky. There are lots of ideas out there, but which ones work? That’s where the Engaging News Project comes in. The Engaging News Project uses academic research to test what makes online news commercially viable and democratically beneficial. During this workshop, ENP Director Dr. Talia Stroud will share some of our research findings, covering topics such as comment sections, social media buttons, polls and quizzes, and website design. We also will discuss how our findings can be used in newsrooms, on the web more broadly, and in the classroom. The session also will have room for brainstorming and feedback on what the Engaging News Project should research next.

Video Games and the Future of Narrative

Clara Fernandez-Vara, Associate Arts Professor, NYU

Video games are already a defining force in digital storytelling, but how they tell stories is widely misunderstood and often we see games that do not take advantage of the potential of the medium. This workshop will cover key concepts of storytelling in games, such as new models of authorship, the challenges of narrative games, and the role of technology. These concepts will help us understand better how video games can be part of the transmedia landscape, and how game design can inform creating experiences in virtual reality.

Behind the Scenes Prototyping Interactive Art & Design

Eric Forman, Head of Innovation, Faculty, SVA MFA Interaction Design

The explosion of “Maker” culture has led to an unprecedented flood of new design objects, products, and art experiences. What does it actually look like to build and test new ideas? What are the challenges of making with disparate materials, tools, and technologies? Which of the newly hyped fabrication methods are best, and when are old methods better than new? See behind the scenes with interactive artist/designer Eric Forman how an idea is taken from concept to prototyping to production. Process journeys for several projects will be shown using lasercutting, 3D printing, CNC milling, electronic circuit design, custom software, and old-fashioned woodworking.

User Experience: The Great Differentiator

Craig MacDonald, Assistant Professor, Pratt Institute

In today's hyper-competitive media landscape, the top companies are not those with the fastest technology or the biggest content library but those who consistently offer memorable and engaging experiences for their users. In this workshop, attendees will learn the key concepts and methods of User Experience (UX) and how a combination of design thinking and experience-centered strategy can help brands create and sustain meaningful relationships with their customers.
